Terracotta ('baked earth' in Italian) a reddish brown natural clay has long been used for sculpture. After the piece is modeled and allowed to dry until bone-hard, it is fired in a kiln (oven) at a temperature sufficient to complete the drying and hardening process, chemically altering the clay to make it permanent. - Janetta Rebold Benton
